Reading the Bible

Reading stories.

Follow the people, the choices, and the questions a story leaves with you.

Read a whole story before deciding what lesson it teaches. Follow the people, the problem they face, and what happens next.

Watch the scene unfold

Read Jesus’ story of the good Samaritan in Luke 10:25–37, including the conversation that introduces it. What question is being asked? How does the story respond?

Notice the choices

Who acts? Who passes by? What details does the writer include? Notice how the story presents a character’s choices. It may be showing us the consequences of an action rather than encouraging us to copy it.

Try a second reading

  • Describe what happens without interpreting it yet.
  • Find the moment when the situation changes.
  • Notice what surprises you.
  • Return to the question that began the passage.

Some biblical narratives tell of historical events; others, such as parables, teach through a story. Context helps you recognize what you are reading.
